Background

In 2008 Mayor Clarence Sweetland appointed Councillor-at-large Sherry Wilson to be Liaison Councillor for Environmental Strategies. Recognizing the vast amount of information and looking at the numerous projects undertaken by other municipalities, Councillor Wilson determined that it would be productive to form a committee.

To date our committee has started a number of projects such as composting and providing Energy Meters for residents to sign out at town hall so they may determine how much energy they consume in their own home or business.

Our Environmental Strategies Committee has been very busy looking at what we can do to make Riverview a greener community, through promotion, education, and implemention of projects which will benefit us all.

Introduced in 2011, the Green Development Program offers a building permit discount to commercial and industrial developers that meet the LEED standard.

There are also initiatives aimed at protecting the source of our water supply, building eco-friendly infrastructure, and preserving the Town's natural environment.

The town is currently preparing a new Municipal Plan that will provide a framework for land use, development and municipal services in Riverview for the next 5 years.

There was an open house meeting followed by a workshop in April, and Thursday May 12, 7-9pm there will be a public presentation on the proposed land use policy.

Public feedback will be gathered throughout the year.

The CAN-BIKE safe cycling program provides a nationally standardized set of courses that can be taught through a variety of organisations. The course deals with all aspects of cycling safely, enjoying the experience on the road and having fun in the process and it is oriented toward recreational and utility cycling.

What is peak oil?

"Peak oil" is the term used to describe the situation when the amount of oil that can be extracted from the earth in a given year begins to decline because geological limitations are reached. Extracting oil becomes more and more difficult, so that costs escalate and the amount of oil produced begins to decline. The term peak oil is generally used to describe a decline in worldwide production, but a similar phenomenon exists for individual countries and other smaller areas.

The STAR Subcommittee

The Sustainable Transportation And Recreation Subcommittee was formed in June, 2009. It presently has one major project on the drawing board. This is to develop the Town of Riverview as a Bicycle-Friendly Community.

The Town of Riverview has been successful in acquiring $33,000.00 from the Environmental Trust Fund. These funds allow us to complete the first two of five milestones to become a member of the Partners for Climate Protection Program, a network of Canadian municipal governments that have committed to reducing greenhouse gasses and acting on climate change.
