After several decades of studies and legal arguments, the gates of the causeway opened today.

Built in the late 1960s, the causeway gates prevented the tidal bore from moving further upstream.

This change in the natural flow of the river had created a freshwater headpond and ecosystem upstream of the gates, and it also affected the tidal action downstream.
